Make a difference in a child's life,
become a Reading Partners Tutor!
Reading Partners is dedicated to teaching at-risk elementary school children to read by recruiting and training community volunteers to provie one-on-one tutoring to struggling students. We partner with high-need public schools and provide a results-oriented intervention for the lowest-performing readers. In addition, volunteers use a structured curriculum, giving students the extra attention and assistance necessary to improve their reading abilities.
Reading Partners fulfills a community need. Fewer than 20% of students reading below grade-level in 3rd grade go on to attend college. Literacy is the most fundamental skill children need to acqure in order to overcome chanllenges and open endless doors of opportunity. Reading Partners studens who are tutored two times per week typically advance one grade level in reading in only 3 months. Participation in Reading Partners also improves students' self-esteem, communication skills, in-class participation, and general interest in reading.
Volunteer Commitment: The volunteer time commitment is flexible. Turoring sessions are 45 minutes in lenght and students must attend 2 sesions per week. Tutors can commit to the Reading Center for as many sessions per week as their availability allows.
Training: Before beginning as a tutor, volunteers are required to complete a New Tutor Orientation online as well as a 1 hour shadow session. During tutoring sessions, on-site program staff provide on-going support to tutors and students.
