Make a difference in a childs life
BECOME A TUTOR WITH YES READING!

YES READING is dedicated to teaching at-risk children to read by recruiting and training community volunteers to provide tutoring to struggling students. We partner with high-need public schools and provide a results-oriented intervention for the lowest-performing readers. Volunteer tutors work one-on-one with elementary and middle school students in our structured curriculum, giving students the extra attention and assistance necessary to improve their reading abilities.

YES READING fulfills a community need. More than 80% of YES Reading students are learning English as a second language and living in families struggling with poverty. Literacy is the most fundamental skill children need to acquire in order to overcome these challenges and open endless doors of opportunity. YES Reading students who are tutored two times per week typically advance one grade level in reading in only 3 months. Participation in YES Reading also improves students’ self-esteem, communication skills, in-class participation, and general interest in reading.

YES READING is currently hosting a pilot program here at Castro. Avenidas’s Early Literacy Program has had a long presence here at Castro and their tutors have done an amazing job. They have been truly dedicated and we are appreciative to be partnering with ELP and their tutors.

PROGRAM DETAILS:

Volunteer Commitment: The volunteer time commitment is flexible. On average, tutors spend two hours each week at the Reading Center, allowing them to work with 3 different students for 40 minutes each. However, volunteers can come for any length of time. Tutors who commit to one or more sessions each week will work with the same student(s) each time.

Training: Before beginning as a tutor, volunteers are required to attend a 2 hour training and shadow several tutoring sessions. During tutoring sessions, on-site program staff provide ongoing support to tutors and students.

Contact Info: If you’d like to make a difference in a student’s life, simultaneously enriching your own life, please send an email to info@yesreading.org and indicate the program site that you are most interested in. A member of our program staff will follow up with you.
