Dolphin Whistle ~ 10.15.2025

Principal’s Message:

Hello Dolphins,

October is Safety Month in MVWSD. Don’t forget that the districtwide earthquake drill is next Tuesday, Oct 21. We have reviewed our procedures, and we are ready to practice. Parents, since students will be outside for approximately one hour, please plan to apply sunscreen to your child in the morning and have them bring a hat if they’re sun-sensitive. Please reassure your child that drills are our way of practicing for an emergency.

In the event of an emergency, like an earthquake, it’s possible that circumstances are not safe enough for us to release students as we typically do at the end of the school day. In an emergency, parents should not rush to school, but instead wait for updates from email, on mvwsd.org, social media and text/phone calls. So we know all students are accounted for, our schools will release students systematically to authorized adults when it’s safe. Please review our parent-student reunification procedures here. If we have an emergency when parents need to be picked up students, student release will happen on the Mistral side of campus. The gates on Castro side of campus will not be accessible.

1. Follow the signs to the area marked for Student Sign Out (#1) on the Mistral side of campus.

  • Stand in the appropriate line according to the first letter of the student’s last name.

  • Present picture identification. This may seem like a nuisance, but it is important for your child’s safety.

  • Complete and sign the student release form.

  • Receive a ticket or card. (A runner with a corresponding ticket or card will be sent to the area designated for students so that your child can be reunited with you at the Student Reunion area.

 2. Move to the Student Reunion (#2) area.

  • Your child will be sent to the Student Reunion area with the corresponding ticket or card for verification.

  • Please be patient. We will be releasing students from Castro, Mistral, and Latham Preschool from the same location.

 3. Once you have been reunited, parent and child(ren) should leave campus immediately.

Emergencies may never happen, but if they do, we’ll be better protected and more able to help ourselves and others. For more details about safety at school, please see https://www.mvwsd.org/safety.

In Partnership,

Principal Taylor

Short-term Independent Study

Short-term Independent Study is a contract that allows students to work independently when there are circumstances that make attending school difficult. Short-term Independent study can range from a minimum of 3 days and a maximum of 14 days per school year. Contracts are approved on a case-by-case basis, require a 2-week notice, and require students to be in good academic and attendance standing.

While we know that some absences cannot be helped, it is important to do your best to have your child in school as much as possible. Whenever you can, try to avoid taking trips during the school year -- or make efforts to take trips during District holidays (2025-2026 School Year Calendar). Our office staff can assist you with contract details: Ms. Antunez [email protected] or Ms. Judy [email protected].

*Please note, if the contract is not approved, the days will be counted as unexcused and the student may be considered truant.

*Also note that extending vacation is not considered an excused absence. Students will be considered truant if they accumulate absences for vacation purposes.

Reporting an Absence

Please call the office at (650) 526-3590 or email [email protected] to report an absence or late arrival.  Provide the following information: date of absence, student’s name, grade and room number, reason for absence, name and relationship of the person reporting the absence.
